Her shield deflects metal objects. She said no metal weapon can harm her, or something to that effect. The senator also said that Eugeo went easy on them with his ice attack, intentionally... the hint that he was going to do so was when he muttered Alice's name, that's when he remembered. His attack was weak... they showed the ice already beginning to melt as he was walking away. They probably broke out before the senator reached them, or as he reached them and took him by surprise. At that point, Eugeuo had decided to go up and finish off the Pontifex by himself, leaving Kirito and Alice out of it. He realized that Alice was working with Kirito, so he no longer needed to use the dagger on her, and tried using it on the Pontifex, not knowing she had already shielded herself against metal weapons.
