You really wouldn't expect this kind of emotional depth from a show like Sao which besides the Sinon arc was pretty shallow with its writing

I don't know if I'd consider the first arc, nor Sinon's arc, or this arc shallow writing, and all things considered, up till this point that's the majority of the show. You could certainly make the argument for the second arc rescuing Asuna, along with the short filler arcs.
