News about the players dying was kept secret to other players, the only ones who know that are Kirito and the people from the Virtual Division, like the guy who hired him to go into GGO. For the normal GGO players, Death Gun is just a myth and they only know that the people he shot in the game never logged back in, but it hasn't been that long for it to really raise an alarm. As for why it's kept a secret, there are 3 possibilities : the company could be trying to sweep it under the rug to prevent players from avoiding their game, the government could be trying to avoid a mass panic, or the most likely, Death Gun would be more cautious and harder to find if they made it public that they're looking for him. Essentially, they're using strong players as bait.
