Yeah you definitely want to continue with the manga when you're done with the anime. The last arc serves as a closure arc for the anime and the ant arc mostly, but in the anime it's also a transition arc to the next huge arc (which so far is split into 2 big arcs at least). Lots of new characters, lots of old returning characters, shitload of new abilities, some things you might have expected to happen in the anime but didn't, and it's probably the darkest arc yet... anyway, check it out when you're done with the anime, and personally, I think it'd be cool if you did some reactions or reviews of the manga chapters (or some of them). It's fun to see what anime viewers think of the story post-manga, and I'm sure you would both enjoy it. I hope one day it gets animated (can't believe this anime first aired 8 years ago already..) And as some others have said, it's been on constant hiatus. Like Berserk. But recently we've had 20 chapters a year (in batches of 10 chapters). And the author confirmed in a recent interview that he has a lot of ideas yet for Hunter.
