From the sand She came, and from the sand She created, brandishing Retribution which was like a bony pick whose blade was endless. She came to the ship, whose infinite corridors stretched into the pale abyss of the ocean, and covered in the shadow of Her tower like a terrible hydra of azure and scarlet and chrysoprase, She took in Their hands those of the sailor.

“We are the Last, and from my Ways I will Weave What Must Be. In you I see what must be woven, and with our hands I will weave you. Answer.”

And trembling with hatred, he answered.

And the fourth brandished his blades, and in a storm of disgust, sliced Her into six and sliced Her into four and sliced Her into three, and of Her, nothing remained. The Last was sown across snow and sand and swamp and stone, and when the Imposter found Her sprouts, he watered them with his milt. And from Her sprouts She was rebirthed, pale and weakened and enraged, and from Her sprouts was birthed Her tarot.

From the first sprout, the Courtesan awoke.

From the second sprout, the Bloodletter awoke.

From the third sprout, Her Flesh awoke.

From the fourth sprout, Her Mercy awoke.

From the fifth sprout, Her Retribution awoke.

From the sixth sprout, the Gates awoke.

From the seventh sprout, the Jester awoke.

From the eighth sprout, the Monolith awoke.

From the ninth sprout, Her Veiled Lamp awoke.

From the tenth sprout, Her Solitude awoke.

From the eleventh sprout, the Unseen awoke.

From the twelfth sprout, Her Crystal awoke.

From the thirteenth sprout, the Star awoke.

From Her tears of rage, the Third Psalm was born, a gargantuan spine of sandstone and dust cleaving infinity in half; and at long last She set off, weakened and bloodthirsty and covered in the shadow of her Tower, to murder the Imposter and collect Her sprouts, one, by, one, until She could face the sailor again, swearing to erase his forsaken name from the Tapestry.
