Gray Matter was very significant. Maybe not in terms of the plot so far, but for sure in Walt’s character.

Marie is a kleptomaniac. She compulsively steals things (that she doesn’t need or even want) and can’t really stop herself, like an addiction. (It's a type of OCD mental illness.) At the beginning of the series we find out she’s been seeing a therapist for this problem and has it somewhat under control, but she seems to backslide into it during times of stress. For example, she stole the gift for Skyler’s baby shower probably because Skyler’s pregnancy brought up jealousy and anxiety for her. (The sisters have a rocky, competitive relationship.) Now it’s happening again because she’s reaching her emotional breaking point with Hank. You were right: her fake life stories at the open houses were escapism… her pretending to be someone else for a little while. And the kleptomania is a coping mechanism for her extreme stress. Gives us a lot of sympathy for Marie and insight into her character. It’s very interesting on this show how everyone has various addictions (drugs, money, power) and obsessions (collecting, stealing, hiding/solving crimes). It makes the characters and their interactions very complicated and interesting, just like real life… which is why this show is SO GREAT!!!
