I don’t know if anyone has already commented on this, as I’m not going to read through all of the comments, but I wanted to point out that Voldemort’s resurrection scene is very much a type of Black Mass. Anyone familiar with the Catholic Mass, or similar types of religious ceremonies can probably see the parallels. You have the bone of Voldemort’s father, the blood of his enemy and the flesh of his servant contributing to his resurrection. There are definite similarities to the ceremony of communion. It was very ironic that when these books were coming out that there were some Christian Fundamentalists who accused the series of being satanic and tried to have them banned from libraries. When in reality the books contain a great deal of Christian symbolism and messages about the significance of sacrifice and the importance of love. It’s not Christian in a preachy way but the themes are there. And part of that is due to the fact that the author had studied Classics. Many of the English novels from the past couple of centuries that we consider classics are full of Christian symbolism and themes. Another factor is that Rowling was in the very early stages of developing the Harry Potter series when her mother died. Her mother’s death greatly affected her and the story is definitely influenced by it. Voldemort’s greatest fear is death. And one of the most important messages of the story is that love transcends death.

I would like to share a couple of other thoughts. Notice that when Voldemort and Harry duel, Voldemort throws out an Avada Kedavra and Harry uses Expelliarmus, the Disarming Spell. Remember that the first time Harry sees the Expelliarmus spell being used is in the Dueling lesson from Chamber of Secrets. Professor Snape uses the spell on Lockhart during their demonstration. Just keep that little detail in mind. The other thing I would like to point out is that the movie cuts out the entire House Elf subplot that is in the books. As much as you two seemed to enjoy Dobby, I think you would really enjoy his expanded story in the books. In fact, the entire House Elf storyline in the book series adds some additional depth to the entire story. It isn’t in the third book, but it is part of all the rest, especially books four, five and seven. As I have seen people already mention to you, the audio books are available to listen to on a couple of different websites. And I highly recommend the Stephen Fry version over the Jim Dale version. They really would be a fun listen if you would like an option to reading the books. As big as the Harry Potter fandom is, I bet you could have some great live discussions on the differences between the books and the movies if you chose to listened to them or even read them. They are so engaging that they are credited with getting an entire generation of kids to start reading.
