I think you figured this out already, but the complex interaction with Louise and General Shang was because of non-linear time. He felt compelled to tell her those words at that exact moment (without really knowing why), just like she felt compelled to make the phone call at that exact moment (without really knowing why). If you think of it like the folding of space-time (rather than a straight line), that’s how seemingly past, present and future events can be happening simultaneously. It’s like folding a piece of fabric in many layers… some parts will ‘touch’, other parts remain isolated. The dying words of Shang’s wife are quite poetic: “In war, there are no winners, only widows.” It was purposefully left untranslated by the director in the film, but people translated from Mandarin to English after the movie was released. Also, very interesting fact that Villeneuve hired several real-life linguistic experts to consult on the film and to create the alien language, which is why it’s so well-executed and sophisticated. The circular nature of the alien language is also symbolic of the circular nature of non-linear time. Brilliant.

If you think about it, the real hero of this movie is Abbott. He came to Earth, because of how they perceive time, knowing he would be killed and still came to save humanity and his own species

I'm pretty sure the bird is used to detect if Carbon Monoxide is present, i.e. the leftovers of spent Oxygen. If there is more CM than Oxygen, we die and suffocate. So i'm pretty sure the CM is a heavier gas than Oxygen and it rises from thr ground up, hence the bird being in a cage on the floor. If it dies and stops tweeting, it's time to go, oxygen is running low but still enough that your head is high up enough to breath it before the gas gets to you.

SuddenImpulse

Correct. This is where the phrase "canary in a coal mine" comes from. Birds are much more sensitive to various fumes, radiation, gases and such that they are more likely to show negative effects or even death much sooner than humans. An unpleasant but very effective detection/warning system.

I get where Spartan’s coming from (I don’t know how people thought this would be a Spartan movie lol), the film is very cerebral and my first impression after watching it was very similar to his. Its definitely one you have to sit with, but in retrospect I do think the philosophies and concepts it explores are very thought provoking and powerful

I don’t know how you can be confused when Louise literally explains what their purpose/gift is, that it’s their language and once you speak it and understand it you open time to be able to see the future. And the aliens give it to humanity so in the future humanity can help them. You guys need to pay closer attention.
