I always thought the death note community was very unfair to Near. Just because everyone liked L, Near got dismissed straight up from the beginning instead of giving him credit

Tingeling

I know Near and Mello are quite controversial within the fandom, especially with those who only watch the anime since it compresses their part of the story quite a bit and therefore many moments feel rushed. Personally, I love Near, he’s my second favourite character after L. I also feel he’s a better ”final antagonist” to Light than L would have been. Reason being that L, however inadvertantly, really fueled Light’s God complex. He kept putting Kira on a sort of pedestal, and saying that catching him would be worth dying for. Near, on the other hand, views the notebook as what makes Kira special, not the person behind it. So for Light, Near makes the worse antagonist. A child who doesn’t think there’s anything special about him, rather than a man who thinks Kira is exceptional. One small gripe I have with the show (and it’s all personal preference)… If something like Kira/ the Death Note had appeared IRL, I doubt it would have the same effect on the world as it does in the show. We know for a fact that the death penalty doesn’t act as a deterrent, so why would Kira/DN? People would still commit crimes of passion, people would still think it wouldn’t happen to them, or think they won’t get caught. Maybe it would have an effect on a smal scale, but I find it very hard to believe it would be as impactful as it is on the show.
