I hope you watch Young Frankenstein for Halloween then watch miracle on 34th St. and it’s a wonderful life for Christmas

Apparently, Margaret Hamilton, who played the wicked witch, was burned during that vanishing act in the land of Oz. That’s how real the fire was.

I remember watching this on TV every year. It was a family tradition. Then my husband and I watched it with our kid. Amber, you did a great job explaining this to Jordan. The original tin man did have a horrible reaction to the makeup and backed out. Then they got the actor who did play the tin man. The woman who played the wicked witch was severely burned in the the trap door during the munchinland departing scene. And so much more.....

See Jay as adult you seen the education of the movie. They all had it in them it was just needed to be brought out. I've been asking for Judy Garland for a long time for female Fridays. She has a beautiful voice. I also told you each generation since this movie came out has known of this movie. Now the girls know of it through dance. So many songs and so many Parodies for this movie. Oz didn't give nothing to the tin that he didn't already have.Song by America. For over 84 years now amazing . I always wanted to dress like Glenda the good witch I love her outfit.

Mike Westlake

We also watched this once a year as a family

The great Judy Garland 🙌🏼. Her 1954 version of “A Star Is Born” is my favorite (if you’re ever interested in watching it). Last year I suggested her Christmas classic “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas”, which I hope you’ll react to this time around 🤞🏼. It was written for her movie “Meet Me In St.Louis”. She’s a great singer, and was the first woman to win a Grammy for album of the year. She had some struggles in her life, due to the pressures of child hood stardom (especially in her time). Can’t wait to watch your reaction, hope you enjoyed it.

Musical theater? Hamilton! There's a trio of smart, sassy sisters in it that girls ADORE.

If you guys like modern musicals you should try the pitch perfect trilogy, if you prefer classic musicals then try Oklahoma (1955), 7 Brides for 7 brothers (1954), On the Town (1949) or West Side Story (1961) - this is the musical, gang version of Romeo and Juliet

Mary Alice

The first time you see the wicked witch of the west, when she disappears, she actually got burned pretty badly. You might want to check out The Wiz. A more modern version of Wizard of Oz. Michael Jackson is the Scarecrow and Diana Ross is Dorothy.

For many years black & white and color films both existed alongside each other. They even had separate cinematography Oscars. That's why you can't simply guess by the year of production which it might be. There were several considerations to determine whether a film would be shot in color or black & white. The first was cost. Technicolor was expensive, and difficult to work with. It wasn't until the late 60's and early 70's that competition from Eastman Kodak made shooting in color practical for smaller productions. Consider Alfred Hitchcock, for example. His 50's masterpieces of Rear Window, Vertigo, and North by Northwest were all color with big stars. But when he pitched Pyscho to the studio, he promised to do it quick and cheap. Hence, less well known stars, and black and white photography. And then there's whether the film was going to have sufficient spectacle and star power to warrant the extra cost and effort of shooting in color. Hit Broadway musicals adapted for screen, historical and biblical epics, and things of that nature often got the color film treatment. Grounded dramas or comedies, not so much. A western with John Wayne where you want to show off the natural beauty and breathtaking vistas of the west gets you The Searchers in color. But if it's a western with Gary Cooper going around to locations in a town talking to people before the end shootout, you get High Noon shot in black & white. The adventure film to exotic places gets color, and the courtroom drama doesn't. So, musical fantasy with lots of spectacle like Wizard of Oz gets color. The romantic drama where a clever script does the dazzling as folks hang around in a club and talk a lot like Casablanca gets monochrome.

It was fun to see Amber on her nostalgia trip, and glad the film eventually won over Jay. How could he not like a badass like Dorothy Gale: Witch Slayer! Also, now he'll get that one joke from Wreck It Ralph where the Oreo guards march and sing. Unless you guys feel like trying out some Marx Brothers comedies, or musicals of Busby Berkely or something crazy like that, I'm going to guess this is the only movie from the 30's we'll get on the channel. At least for a long while. But if you do feel like going really old school, I would recommend the romantic comedy hit of 1934, It Happened One Night starring Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert. A rare non-musical comedy to ever win a Best Picture Oscar, and I think the only one to sweep the top categories. For years it stood as THE gold standard of romantic comedies. And pre-Hays code, so a little bit racy for its day.

I heard that Margaret Hamilton was a sweetheart IRL. I’ve often found with actors and actresses who play the most evil, horrible people onscreen are usually the exact opposite offscreen. There was a story about how kids went trick or treating and went to Margaret Hamilton’s house and recognized her from this movie and got genuinely frightened. She had to calm them down, “Oh no, kids! It’s ok! I’m not like that.” LOL Supposedly she was one of the nicest people you could ever meet.

David Croft-Ogawa

What a lot of people don’t know is that the part was originally offered to Shirley Temple, child star of the 30’s and 40’s, but for a variety of reasons she turned it down.
