"Retcon" is a pretty recently added word to fandom, but that hasn't stopped Star Wars from pioneering the practice since the very first movie. It's probably why I just can't get seriously invested in the lore. But even as a casual fan, "It was Palpatine behind the scenes all along" without a single clue dropped previously, and no explanation as to how was just too much for me. I checked out early on this one. And extra demerits for informing the audience of Palpatine's message (i.e. the "inciting incident" of the movie) in the opening text crawl. The #1 rule of movie making is "show, don't tell." We the audience deserved to hear that message. The Last Jedi got a lot of negative backlash from certain segments of the fandom, and so much of this movie seemed like it was trying to undo and make up for that. Like undoing some of the bold choices I admired about the last film. It turns out Rey is related to previously known powerful force user because it's Star Wars, so of course she is. And I was excited to see Kylo Ren in charge, but got to see him become Palpatine's errand boy instead. I guess he did want to be like his grandpa, so maybe that one tracks. 🙄 The narrative is such a messy collection of fetch quests, red herrings, and unearned moments that it just seemed like a screenplay written by a committee composed entirely of people who had no idea what to do for a story. And all the tales I've heard about the production itself with constant reshoots and multiple endings shot and run by test-audiences backs it up. Probably why it's the only Star Wars movie I've only ever seen once. But I am glad Amber and Jay liked it, and I had way more fun watching the reaction than I did the movie. Nice reaction, and looking forward to you seeing the remaining (much better) Star Wars movies still out there.

Amber and Jay, I am so happy you love the “Star Wars” movies and it’s been so much fun watching them with you. Seeing them especially the originals and the prequels is like seeing them again for the first time. I’m 50 and I grew up with the original trilogy then the prequels. The consensus among many “Star Wars” fans is that ever since Disney took over the franchise, they have taken the series in a different direction than George Lucas would have ever imagined. First, killing Han Solo the way they did. He doesn’t get to say goodbye to Leia or Chewie or even Luke. I know that Harrison Ford has wanted to kill off the character for many years and if they wanted to kill Han, fine. But George Lucas would never have done that. Why not make him mortally wounded? He could have been in a coma and he wakes up to see Luke one last time surrounded by Leia, Chewie, and Lando and Luke says, “How are you, Han?” and Han says “Same as always, kid”. Then, Leia says to him, “I love you” to which he replies, “I know” and then he dies. A lovely callback to “Empire” and “Jedi”. Sadly, we never got that. Second, Luke Skywalker the eternal idealist becomes the grumpy old Jedi. I could see him being conflicted and haunted by Kylo Ren, but to run away and abandon his friends? That’s not Luke. I can appreciate Rian Johnson taking an unexpected turn and I thought he had guts for essentially telling JJ Abrams to sod off by killing Snoke, but it didn’t seem to be consistently with Luke’s character. Maybe I’m wrong. Last but not least, the ending of “Rise of Skywalker”. I wanted to walk out of the theater with a “Wow!” Instead it was “Meh”. They didn’t have all of the Force Ghosts and Rey calling herself “Skywalker” seemed a bit too much. I would have ended it with no dialogue. Cut to Obi-Wan, Yoda, Anakin, Qui-Gon, Luke, Leia, and Ben Solo’s Force Ghosts looking back at her as she stares at the Binary Sunset. END Anyways, I loved watching these with you and it warms my heart that you’re so into these movies as I and many others are.
