Great discussion! If you haven't read the book of _A Clockwork Orange_ it's fascinating partly because Anthony Burgess created an entire slang patois for Alex to narrate the story. This made it into the movie but as more of a smattering than a rich linguistic landscape. The last chapter of the book has Alex losing interest in his former mayhem, holding down a job, and thinking of starting a family. This ending makes a major part of the book a commentary on moral panics over the state of the youth. But when Burgess' American publisher got ahold of the book they cut the last chapter because Americans don't need that sissy stuff, apparently. So Kubrick's film, based on that version, became quite a different commentary on how much we love violence.
