I actually remember the "why are sauropods necks so long?" topic coming up in the Jurassic Park novel. it was theorized that the long necks weren't there to reach treetops or attract mates, but to act as a counterweight to their massive tails. The tail was their main (probably ONLY) form of offense, capable of delivering powerful whips to shatter the bodies of any lesser predators, and making larger predators think twice.
