I cried when Gustav died. One of my favourite films. I think Wes was saying a lot more about fascism than you thought, about how none of the humanity and passion - good or bad - shown in the other characters is possible for the forces of fascism. They're simply unable to comprehend something as beautiful as a Gustav, so they break it without a thought.
