Tara

This is such a difficult episode to watch, but it’s an important one at the same time. And I actually prefer when you just watch with us without talking over the show and providing your commentary for the end of the episode.

I love that thumbnail you have at the start with Jamie and Claire, there is so much pain in that picture, but there's also so much love. That's just how I see it. When Jamie and Claire arrive at river run and see his aunt's house at first I thought this will be good for them, somewhere beautiful, peaceful, a place where they can just be with one another. We then meet his aunt, for a blind woman she sees a lot. When you said she sounds like Mrs. Doubtfire you made me laugh, every time she talks I keep thinking of that scene from Mrs. Doubtfire where Mrs. Sellner visits Daniel and he doesn't have his mask on so he sticks his face in the cake. The way she screams when she walks in and sees him. "Hello!" He then says he's sorry and that he looks like a Yeti. I love that movie, I watched that a lot growing up. The world needs more people like Robin Williams, more people like you that bring a light into people's lives. It must be strange for Claire being in a time of slavery, to see all this first hand. It's one thing to read about it, see movies about it, but to be there, to see it with your own eyes, to see the pain in theirs. When Jamie's aunt names him as her heir Claire tells him she can't own slaves, Jamie tells her that if they own river run they could help the slaves, he says "Maybe we can make a small difference for those in our part of the world. A spark that might light a fuse." You'd think it would be as simple as telling them they're free, that their lives are their own. When Jamie is talking to Mr. Campbell he tells him that he wants to free the estate's slaves. He tells Jamie that each one has to perform a meritorious service, such as the act of saving a life, and without that they would not be granted a warrant of freedom. Strange how a piece of paper with some ink on it can determine the course of a persons life. He then tells Jamie that if he has slaves that have performed a meritorious service he then has to post a bond, he tells him it would cost a lot of money and that his actions would be seen as a threat. He then tells Jamie that other people that share his views have disappeared and have never been heard from again. We then meet Rufus, he's being strung up by a hook, they say he's guilty of the assault of a white man, and that the assault of a white man, woman or child is punishable by death. Claire and Jamie help him, they bring him home and Claire works tirelessly to save his life. When he wakes he asks Claire why she helped him, why did she heal him, how strange it must have felt for him, to have someone care for him. He then talks about his home, his sister Abena. He said "Men forced us from the trees where we played. Parted us on the beach. Forced us to ships larger than anything I had ever seen before." Imagine seeing that, watching people you know being captured and forced onto ships, taken far away by people you don't know, speaking a language you don't understand, on a journey to a place where everyone looks different and everybody hates you. Later Claire is talking to Ulysses, she tells him she will do whatever she can to make sure Rufus recovers. Ulysses tells her that if she persists along her path then Rufus will face a fate far worse than death, that saving his soul is all that can be done for him. I thought they would find a way to help him, but then those people came for him, they say it's midnight, that his time is up. They demand he be handed over to them to face justice, like they have a right to take his life. That mob mentality, all that hate, everyone wanting their pound of flesh. Claire tells Rufus she will make him a tea that will help him sleep, she then asks about Abena, she asks what did they like to do, he says "Fish the river at night for butter catfish. Abena's favorite." He then says "I still fish the river at night, like Abena and I used to do long ago. I watch the moonlight on water, and I think Abena might be somewhere under the same moon, and I dream... I dream I might see my sister again one day." This was a sad one. I hope we get to see Abena one day, I hope she lived. That maybe she's out there somewhere, fishing in the moonlight. As always it's been a pleasure watching with you Imon. You're beautiful, always. <3
