This episode is soooo stressful to watch even if you’ve already seen it before (maybe even more so since you already know what it’s going to result in). And poor Gina, she literally did nothing wrong the entire time. She actually let down her walls for BoJack, started a relationship with him, and then she ended up getting strangled for reasons beyond her understanding. If that’s not gonna ignite some major trust issues in a person then idk what will

This episode always makes me think of Heath Ledger and how his mental health drastically declined because of how much he put into playing the Joker in The Dark Knight. This season as a whole I feel has a lot to do with the toxic aspects of the entertainment industry in terms of the actual stories being told. Like, in ep 4, Vance Wagner is brought on and the public is ok with cheering for him again because he gets to play a role that plays off of his toxic outward image. Diane regrets that people aren't interpreting Philbert in the way she intended when writing him, because she wanted to make a criticism of the character and his flaws, but tons of people interpreted the character to justify their own behaviors and beliefs, like how a presidential assassination attempt was carried out by someone who claimed that he was inspired by Taxi Driver, a film where the main character is being criticized, but this person interpreted Travis as a hero instead. Even without the pill popping, there's lack of sleep, an inconsistent schedule where he's staying up all night for shoots some nights but not others, he's overworked because they jumped right into making another season, and the show is just written in such a way that it's too close to home. He's not healthy or mature enough to handle this kind of subject matter without it affecting him. Literally.

An episode that always gets me. A masterclass in building a tension that creeps on up on you. You can feel something is off from the start and it just nags at you as this pit in your stomach grows.

This is the 2nd time I’ve watched this episode since it came out and oof… I forgot how much anxiety it gave me. Poor Gina, one of my fave reoccurring characters and this happens to her. Also dunno if you guys caught this but her song “don’t stop dancing” (super catchy) is the phrase bojack drilled into Sarah Lynn during the horsin’ around days. I believe it was season 1? Super dark song but I was dancing to it lol

The lyrics of the song Gina sings have so much meaning. “Life’s a never ending show my friend” which goes back to Free Churro when Bojack said “you can never have a happy ending because there’s always more show”. “Nothings certain but the curtain” meaning the only thing we’re certain about is that everyone dies in the end and that everything comes to an end. I also like to think that when Bojack stares at the blow up version of himself it’s almost him telling himself “I see you” just as his mom told him. All of the terrible things happening to him and the people around him because of his actions and he finally stops and accepts it. No excuses. After all the time he’s spent beating himself up for being an awful person, looking for ways to avoid accountability, this is when he finally sees himself for what he truly is

This might be my favourite Bojack episode, just because of how much it plays out like a horror movie? It's straight up frightening to see how Bojack can't tell the difference between reality, Philbert, and his own delusions. I think it's especially tragic, 'cause his relationship with Gina (even though it had some really unhealthy sides to it, like you pointed out) also had some really sweet moments? I think he genuinely wanted to help her with the singing and just hadn't thought his idea through - and just last episode, they were being all cute with the earrings and at the party. It's so heartbreaking to see it end like this, especially for Gina who just seems like a nice lady who took a chance on a relationship and finally had some stuff going for her. Also, your observations that low self-esteem can be really solipsistic is so on point. I think it's (unfortunately) relatable for a lot of us to see Bojack focus so much on his own flaws that he never thinks of the people around him - and assumes they're all always focused on his flaws and shortcomings as much as he is. "I'm so horrible and everyone's thinking about it all the time and everything that goes wrong is my fault" still means you think the world revolves around you, after all, and most of us fall into that trap to some degree. Ah, sorry to be so long and rambly. I just love this episode, and I'd been so stoked to see you guys' reaction to it :) Great as always

I think what really sucks is that this season there's a lot of ways that Bojack really worked on himself; stopped/cut down on drinking, stepped up as an older brother to hollyhock, learned to treat Gina as a partner and an equal. And it's like, he's still responsible for his own actions, but despite his working on himself, alot of his spinning out was like exterior stuff. The pill addiction is way too common in our shitty big pharma healthcare system. It was exacerbated by lack of sleep and fucked up hours die to the pressures of his Hollywood job. All these extrinsic pressures from American capitalism enabled him to fall to pieces again.

More than capitalism, its specifically showbiz. I agree on that. But no, Bojack didn't work on himself. Cutting down the drinking was nothing new to him, he did it in season 2 (and we later see in flashbacks he's done it many times before). He never considered Hollyhock's feelings either by bringing her back to his house, where her trauma occurred and acting like it was no big deal. The only thing we saw him do "for her" was calling her in the middle of the night, waking her up when she had school to focus on. His actions were selfish. As for Gina, he was. a little more self-less, but he still kept some pretty important things from her. "Working on himself" really meant getting professional help, and he never did that. Lastly, about the pills, how did he end up getting addicted to them in the first place? By jumping off a building so he could outshine Mr. Peanutbutter. I agree that big pharma is a super corrupt industry, but Bojack set himself up to get ensnared by it in this case.

You are being way too cynical about Gina. She obviously liked Bojack. AND she was concerned for her career. It's possible to do both.

The way they themed this episode like an episode of 'Philbert' highlighting the problems Bojack has had with the tough filming schedule, how the drugs has been affecting him, his paranoia, was amazing. I also really loved the Todd ads; He has come a long way personally but professionally had no idea what he was expected to do for the show. I had anxiety watching this season the first time because i thought the Bojack balloon and staircase were alluding to his death by either overdose or suicide. What actually happened wasn't either but still horrible. As someone who has related to Bojack's issues and previous struggles; this episode took his failures and dysfunction to a monumental height. He needs to take accountability for what he did to Gina and improve himself. I know the drugs, addiction, injury, mental health etc all added to it but that's not an excuse for his responsibility for strangling her. He should have never let things go that far. I know you two have kept an open mind to Bojack not being 'a lost cause' partly because you root for him and partly because of fans like me who relate to him. But at this point its understandable to not offer him that grace if he isn't going to work on himself.
