The emotions Legend of Korra elicits are on another level honestly, and these episodes are the height of that. Absolutely shocking that a show with such stellar animation, fight choreography, characters and writing was taken off TV during its original run. Can't tell you how great these reaction have been seeing you both enjoying it so much. Think both series have their own strengths and weaknesses, and whilst Korra means more to me on a personal level, I think they're both equally great with the stories they both tell. Next week is going to be absoloutely incredible

Loved how teaching Bolin metalbending / breaking out of their Ba Sing Se prison cell distracts from the possibility of him learning the new Earth bending subset they've been showing off all season until the last dire moment; Lava bending! P'li and Zaheer; a Romeo and Juliet level tragedy. He's the opposite of the Dragonfly from the last Bojack episode. Instead of refusing to fly forever after losing his love; he couldn't fly until he lost her. Epic save by Kuvira! Its fun to seeing her in the background knowing who she is and watching her earn her way from background character to a legit minor character. I know you two are suspicious of everyone but cmon how could she be evil? She saved Tonraq's life!

I love TLOK extending the possibilities of bending. Bending is very linked to mentality and perspective. If you only think about the bulk elements then that is the only thing you will be able to manipulate. To me, higher level techniques or "abilities" are simply the user realizing either another level of control, either consciously or subconsciously, (e.g., lava bending, lightning) or realizing the presence of their element in something else (e.g., blood bending, metal bending). Along with the great fights, this series really does stand up to ATLA.

Well, Bolin does have an Earth Kingdom dad and a Fire Nation mom, (and fire bending brother), lava makes sense for him.

since Bolin's parents are both firebender and earthbender, he is able to lavabend.

While his parentage may have something to do with it, I think it largely comes down to the fact that Bolin is a very free-spirited and "loose"-styled Earthbender. We get a good glimpse of that in his first lesson to Korra, but his style largely lacks the precision needed to be a Metalbender, but is quit perfect for something as free and uncontrollable as Lava. Plus, while also probably not an actual reason he can do it, he is the closest in personality to Ghazan, do with that as you will.

That is definitely not true. What about Ghazan then. The only person to directly have a connection to more than 2 element is the Avatar. Techniques and styles can be applied to others, like lightning redirection, but a bender can't have actual abilities of 2 elements.

well then i think it’s partially hereditary and that he is just someone who is blessed with the technique then. look at bloodbending. Noatak and Tarrlock got the technique by being Yakone’s sons. so i’m sure having it be hereditary plays a partial or big role in having these special techniques of bending.

and technically lavabending isn’t the ability to have both earth and firebending. we never see Ghazan or Bolin use “fire”. they can only earthbend and Lavabend, which is a subdivision technique of earthbending. we never see them once use fire. so therefore they don’t have fire. just earth and one of its subbending, lavabending. never once i said that Ghazan and Boling can EARTH AND FIREbend.
