I thought Kaneki discovered why Touka’s brother joined the other group remember Kaneki said Touka’s brother could have killed him but didn’t and that Touka’s brother joined for protection for maybe his sister. It’s like Kaneki joined the top clan to perhaps find out what they are up to maybe going undercover or to protect like Touka’s brother did the ones he cared for. Maybe by joining them they will now leave his friends alone that’s what I got out of it.

The hint or reason to why Kaneki joined Aogiri was stated during his convo-fight with Ayato. He said it was for "protection" for someone Ayato holds dear. Meaning joining them, Aogiri, as a way to get stronger himself rather than staying in Anteiku and pretty much do nothing and stay weak. To have the means and be able to protect his dear ones.

Season 2 is a Blasphemy... Sadly, The only real way to enjoy and understand Tokyo Ghoul is the manga. They do have their moments in the anime but it is very far few in between.

Season 2 does not follow the manga which is why season 3 does not follow the events of this season since its manga based. READ THE MANGA!!!!! To many significant changes were made in this season for example this episode, i dont want to spoil the canon story but the events of this season confuse and complicate the story, which is why you feel confused about him joining aoigiri

season 2 is all over the place season three is where it continues. so i recommend read the manga until you get to the beginning of season 3 then react to it
