You can’t just post a picture like this without knowing what kind of involuntary drool reaction you’re causing. Be more responsible with your powers damnit!

I work for a local TV news station & we have a bunch of archived footage on these tapes - they're absolutely massive compared to most other cassette formats! Working players are getting increasingly difficult to find, though!

Many years ago, I was contacted by my state’s historical museum asking if they could archive some street footage I’d shot for an ancient YouTube video. I was surprised to learn that they transfer all digital video to analog magnetic umatic tapes because the media lasts longer, requires minimal upkeep and degrades gracefully. Digital is inherently fragile on long timelines.

I have a working Sony BVW-400A Betacam SP camera that I’d be happy to lend you, if you like!

Did I miss "go time?" It's been several tomorrows now. 😢

Oh! My dad had a production company in Chile, for TV ads and documentaries. They owned several Betacam SP machines! That brings so many memories. And, a few days ago, I went to Swapfest (the electronics flea market at MIT), and they had a portable one, working, for $400. :-)
