John, glad you enjoyed this. I can’t speak for the band, but Zappa himself was not a drug user. But certainly the listeners were. He thought of this album as an oratorio. Although not religious, all the songs are intended to be interconnected. It speaks to Frank’s convictions and criticisms of America. It’s chock full of classical music references, particularly to Stravinsky’s Rites of Spring, Firebird, and other works of his. Brown Shoes Don’t Make It is the centerpiece of the album, ripping at the corruption and awfulness of our government. So much satire! I could go on and on about him and his music. He was and is considered one of the most innovative musicians of his generation.
