Dan - the loose stitch after a cable used to be my nemesis too. I googled it and discovered that if you twist the first stitch after a cable - e.g. wrap the yarn in the opposite direction on your purl stitch, this will tighten up that stitch. The reason for the looseness is, a purl stitch after a knit stitch uses more yarn, and the slack gets taken up by the last knit stitch, making it loosey goosey. There are you tube videos explaining this much better than I can, but trust me, it works. It works for ribbing too.
