This is months too late (sorry) but what happened with Hoppers chain is that it was a round shackle which couldn't go over his heel. So he needed it to be hammered into an oval shape so he could slip it off his foot. That's why he braced one side to the railroad track and had the guy hit the other side. But, since he was using a sledgehammer...it caused a lot of damage to his ankle in the process. I imagine Hopper had been trying to situate himself nearest to the most accurate prisoner for weeks... 😉
