This feels like it is literally someone writing a story within X-Files about X-Files as to allow this event. We've had strange things before, certainly, but this as you said is odd. I like the idea of organic transmutation at least.

I had a feeling this will be either pretty bad or pretty good episode. I think i never liked this one. HOWEVER, this time I really loved it. I was grinning the whole time. It had Vince Gilligan vibes for me, I was surprised it was written by Chris Carter

Yeah, it's a strange one for sure. Ending was pretty wholesome, but still a disturbing episode at times. I absolutely love the directing though. "It's the great Mutato" (thunderclap). Also the visual parallels between various people and farm animals was funny. Not sure what the point was, unless it implies they were the products of experiments too.

stranger, odd, wholesome, disturbing and drenched with flare. Which animal would you have been there. I'd love to be a squirrel. well not love, but i'd be one

This episode was a helloween special, and it was supposed to be Chris Carters hommage to Frankenstein. This episode was nominated for the emmys, and one of the jury members literally asked, what kind of stuff Chris Carter smoked when he wrote this. Yes, it's bizarre and comical. But I think this episode was better received back then, as it is today. Back then nobody really complained about the "rape" side of things. Today people are way more sensitive in this regard. So a lot of people today react the same as you. They like the whole production, but feel uncomfortable with certain aspects of the story. Unfortunately Carter used medical rape plots a lot in the show. Also when it comes to abductions and government experiments on women. That's one of the things about his writing that receives a lot of criticism these days. Fun facts: Carter wrote the Mrs. Berkowitz character for Roseanne Barr. They weren't able to get her. Cher always wanted to be in an X Files since she saw the episode Home, season 4. It was her favorite episode. So Carter wrote her into this episode. When she red the script, she refused to take her part, because she didn't want to play as herself, but as a character. So they got a Cher double. There was an interview later, where Cher said, that she loved the episode and regretted her decision. The guy in the Mutato makeup was Chris Owens. Who played the young cigarette smoking man in "Musings of a cigarette smoking man" and "Demons", both season 4.
