I can't imagine how just like.. emotionally and psychologically taxing the whole middle section of this video must've been to make. I honestly considered skipping when the warning popped up just because the whole topic kind of sets off anxiety alarm bells for me but I ended up just sticking it out and you handled it really well. and I really like that you ended it off on a positive note with some recs for good shows, it was a nice little treat for getting through the more difficult stuff. Definitely hoping the next vid lets you give yourself a break. That song at the end is coming along great too, I love how unapologetically Coaltar it is, haha. Speaking of which I guess I wanna ask somethin that I think was a pod spirit question but you didn't end up getting around to it- as a fellow lefty who plays guitar right handed, do you find that you struggled at all with your strumming technique at first? Because it's something I feel I struggle with a lot and I wondered if it was because my weak hand is the one I'm using to strum, but I've seen you play pretty complicated mathy riffs and stuff really well. do you find that being lefty makes that harder?

Hey! So having grown up in the era of dying movies stores with beaded back room doorways, and seen the internet bloom and have basically no partition from mild to wild other than "u 18? y/n", I have been, Goddess help me, been "thinking of the children," and how to best be part of nerdy spaces that is safe for the youths and people with adult interests. Like I feel like there is a real comparison to people stressing out about leather daddies and kink at pride, who have long standing history in supporting LGBTQA+ efforts but still make some people uncomfortable, and the really pervy booths at the anime con who's rent helps the con exist, and the 10 year old pokemon fans walking by it. Also there is the fact that people speaking frankly about sex in geeky spaces has been a boon to many young people with internal struggles and existential questions about their identities, which they often can't get answers from their care givers nor "standard" sex ed. But, as you yourself, expressed some fairly positive shagrin about how available adult content was to you as a youth and now via the internet, do you have any thoughts on how older geeks, and/or event/space (digital/physical) organizers can do to balance youth safety/curiosity? I mean obviously we can't all have a soft spoken sexshop worker give us a genital piercing ala moral oral but yeah what could be done?

Did you ever get in trouble for reading manga in school? I used to be obsessed with Love Hina in middle school and I forgot a volume under my desk once and some kid stole and narced on me saying there was lots of boobies so manga was banned from my school.

Did you know you can import a super cub for hella cheap straight from Japan and they even come branded with like Kumamon and shit, they are cheaper and more feature rich than the US super cub, and you don't even have to register it because it's got such a little motor but that's only if you get the 50cc I did research it's not cheaper to ship it over but you can buy them in the US for 4k$ and motorcycle riding classes will be starting in like May

I think there was a strange trend during the 00s for incredibly dull, yet overly sexualised harem anime. Even is certainly one of them, you could even include School Days, because beyond that final episode, it is a horrifically boring slog to get through. I wonder if there are any other anime that fit this weird niche, shows where if you're not mesmerised by the boobs and panties, there is only brain death waiting for you.

Loved the To Wong Foo reference. It made me wonder, do you ever worry that shows like Keijo run the risk of falling into a similar trap as that movie, where they reinforce regressive tropes but shield themselves from some criticism by being progressive in depictions of other norms? I haven't seen Keijo so I don't want to assume it does this, but I do feel there's a trend I've seen across many forms of media where a selective progressive portrayal is used as protection from criticism of shitty, regressive ideals portrayed elsewhere within a work. I also think constant, meticulous critical evaluation of your own consumption is no way to live, so maybe it doesn't matter even if that is the case! Absolutely love everything you've put out, your videos have been a real highlight of the last year for me, thank you!

There are a lot of artists out there who feel like they would rather die than not create the art they want to create. I’d like to say I fit this description…but deep down I’m scared to die, and I’m lacking in confidence that I can achieve financial well being through art. I think you're right that this is a trend, but Keijo is kind of too stupid to fall into it. IIRC there are some issues that might turn people off the series, like with groping-based humor, but the sport element is pretty straightforward and surface-level--it's not claiming to convey any kind of progressive or feminist commentary beyond the go-to shonen action series motto 'it's good to chase your dreams.' I agree with you that it's not necessary to pick apart the minutiae of the media we enjoy to justify enjoying it, but if you're curious about this particular series and/or progressive-minded commentary on anime in general I've gotten a lot out of the site AnimeFeminist!

It's so difficult to walk the through-line of "This media, no matter how awful or lacking of value I find it, deserves to exist" and not be immediately retorted with like "Oh so we should just let cold hard CSEM and Hate Speech Materials be freely and widely distributed without issue because otherwise that would be infringing on someone's freedom" I find a lot of younger folks online really fall into the trap of trying to figure out that line out with a whole "baby out with the bathwater" mentality (which is why I appreciate channels like you and Ms Lola who make their these around transgressive art deserves to exist) so seeing people respond to it very thoughtfully and give more nuanced discussions is fantastic, but still it can be verrry hard when it looks like you're going to bat for nonces so I really do admire what you do here. Completely unrelated to any of that, my actual question is have you ever heard of the Deltora Quest anime? I haven't watched it but it was based on a book series I loved and I just liked how Emily Rodda turned down multiple studios to adapt her book but let an anime studio take on the property because her kids were MASSIVE weebs hah

Do you find it difficult to pay attention to background music? I know music is like Your Thing but personally I find it hard to watch something with dialogue or play something while also listening to the BGM. So, when you mention the BGM in an anime that's crazy as hell I know I wouldn't have even noticed despite how much I like BGM.

I noticed you tweeted about watching the Yokohama Shopping Diary series's which much like Eiken are 2 ep OVAs based on long running series. Are there any other series that've received partial anime treatment that you'd be interested in seeing animated to completion? Also how did you find out it was pronounced "ayy-ken" as I was convinced for years it was "eye-kan" until hearing the anime.

I really enjoyed this YT vid. Especially the section on the censorship campaign led by Ishihara, which I remember well when it was going down. (Damn, I think I just aged myself). Keep up the awesome work! You made me return to anime from the depths of manga hell (where I basically still reside).

I think I jumped out of my seat when you started talking about Golden Boy, then jumped some more when you talked about Keijo!!!!!! (proper amount of exclamation points added out of due respect). Anyways, with the reoccurring mentions of tails gets trolled, and even a physical book of it in this video, are there any other pieces of wack early 2000s sonic-related media that you enjoy/have fond memories of? The two others that stand out to me was Super Mario Bros Z (which I think you might've mentioned before?) and a weird sprite animated series on youtube about Kirby moving into a house with Sonic, Shadow and Silver, and then promptly falling in love with some sprite animated anime girl and then shortly after becoming a pink hedgehog. There's a Saturn JRPG for Magic Knight Rayearth that I'd definetly recommend if you can get your hands on it. Its short, and has an amazing localization courtesy of Working Designs, who add some fun flourishes to the characters.
