Are you serious about reviving that scrapped anime video you mentioned at the end? Because I'm serious about watching it

Anonymous

May I ask why you privated the video about the manga with the trans woman? It meant a lot to me when I first saw it. If you can't put the video back up, can you remind me of the name of the manga? Thanks!

Have you ever checked out the early 90’s OVA Be-Bop High School? I have no idea if delinquent anime is your jam but I personally found the characters and style pretty enjoyable. This was a banger of a video by the way, right up my alley!

Do you ever see vhs release of media making a kitschy return in the same way that cassette tapes are becoming a popular way to distribute indie music? I know many labels are following the digital streaming / physical cassette release, even in cases where they don't release on CD. Could this never happen due to the relatively larger cost of creating animation compared to music, or could we see a small distributor attempt to sell new anime on vhs, even as a novelty?

Do you have any thoughts on Komi-san, and it's oneshot pilot? That pilot is VERY different. If you haven't read that one, what about other one-shot manga?

Do you remember seeing any OVAs or TV shows of the VHS, early DVD, and/or random premium cable free weekend finds that really resonated with your LGBTQ identity? I remember randomly seeing the Birdy The Mighty OVA first episode as a trans kid in denial, and thinking "Being a girl? Yes, I'd like to order that."

Do you want more ovas, I think I still have that VHS copy of Guy Double Target sitting around, that my dad got for me from the flea market

If it's not exclusively for private use what's your Letterboxd? I'm always looking for recommendations and my primary source atm is Letterboxd reviews, lol

As you said in the video, much has been said about the aesthetics of VHS technology being a good match for horror. Are there any other genres you think are positively influence by being presented on analog media? What are some good examples?

Anonymous

More of a general question but, did you learn how to cultivate your aesthetic or does all of it kinda just come naturally? Or more pointedly, how did you develop your visual style?

Anonymous

Not a question per say but I noticed you mentioned the “Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei (OVA)” And I just have to point out to you the other Megami Tensei direct to VHS (OVA) “Tokyo Revelation” I wouldn’t call it batshit crazy but it makes so little sense that it’s somewhat enjoyable.

Is there one anime that you've read/heard about during the course of making this series that has become your White Whale? One that you know isn't really lost but you haven't been able to get your hands on it?

Eliza Orlando

Omg I sub to you yesterday and you drop this GEM!? Absolutely loved it. Additionally I'd love to hear more about what you felt the defining elements of environment and character design for this era was. I know you mentioned the colour pallet but any additional ramblings you have would be of interest!

You mentioned in the video that VHS lends itself very well to an analog format and I 100% agree. My question is their any genera that you feel lends itself more to digital media? Obviously their are some things that can only work in digital media?

eyezack

hey! absolutely loved the new vid and i can’t wait to watch some of the ones u talked about. while i was watching the vid i was thinking about how good the music was in the background, so i was wondering if anime has influenced your taste in music, and if so, what anime most influenced your taste in and creation of music? once again, thank you for the great content and constantly putting all of us on obscure stuff!

Anonymous

Not really a question but an observation. Your mentioning of how Galaxy of Terror found a cultural niche in Japan that shows up in several anime reminded me of how Streets of Fire had the same kind of cultural relevance in anime around the same time. Anyways keep up the great work!

You and Thorhighheels seem to have a lot of things in common. Both of you make music and have this vintage aesthetic to your videos. I was wondering did you guys get affiliated based on your similar unique interests or was it by chance?

I saw Vampire Hunter D at a screening a few years ago and was so excited to see it show up in your video! What did you think of the OVA’s interpretation of Dracula?

Attitudes toward the VHS fansub era seem to have largely progressed from nostalgia to an appreciation of esoterica; can that dynamic carry forward? What will the equivalent of this video by about in 30 years? Does digital preservation and distribution fundamentally change that relationship, or does bitrot mean that there will always be an esoteric period 2-3 decades back to mine?

Anonymous

more off topic than the other questions, but whats up with that boat clip? wheres it from? why do you use it so much?

Got any recommendations for Horror anime? From any era. Im relatively new to the medium (which is to say, i was casually watching a few of the big mainstream shows from around 2015 onwards), but in recent years a few action series have come out with horror bits sprinkled here and there (JJK, Chainsaw Man) and 2020's adaptation of Dorohedoro made me absolutely fall in love with its charmingly bloody aesthetic. It also reminded me a bit, in some ways, of that era of gratuitously violent OVAs. Reading through the manga there's a lot of western horror references too. It would be cool af to learn about more strictly horror series, from the supernatural to the campy to the psychological and anything in-between. Thx!

Hey! If your looking for something similar to chainsaw man, I would recommend fire punch! I personally have not read the manga but my partner fell in love with both of them! This one was also written by Fujimoto :)

What are some topics you'd like to make videos about, but just don't have enough material / they're not hefty enough to support a full one?

Anonymous

The dissolve effect on the chicken around 29:50 is cool, how do you do it? Also more general/big question: when and how did you decide to go full time making vidoes?

Anonymous

love your work, this video was great! def got one or two recommendations from it so thanks for that :) for a question, not super related to vhs but since you mentioned vampire hunter d i was wondering if you've seen the 2000 madhouse adaption of it vampire hunter d: bloodlust? i wrote a college paper on it once lol and i was wondering if you had any thoughts on it in particular if you had seen it. or if you havent seen it maybe youd like to speak a little more on what appealed to you about the ova? thank you!

This is a bit off topic, but what happened to your Stop!! Hibari-kun video? I swear I saw it on your channel a while ago but I can’t find it anymore.

how are you?

Elias Rosner

It's funny, I was expecting the VHS era to have really been the early 90s rather than the late 70s-80s. Unrelated to that is my question. You talked about the economic boom influencing these anime's visual and artistic sensibilities. Do you think we'll get anything like that again? Or do you think the current trend of spend the money on more anime, more often with less pay for animators will hold till things come to a head? Or neither! Just as speculation

What’s your favorite/oldest piece of older anime merchandise you have or would like to have

Anonymous

thoughts on midori shoujo tsubaki, or just suehiro maruo 's work in general? also, have u read franken fran? its an old favorite of mine but i don't hear many people talk about it.

Pet photos? :o

Seconding the question about Midori Shojo Tsubaki, tho I def understand if talking about stuff w prepubescent child characters is a hard boundary (for reasons of personal taste or risk of demonetization.) I looked up the OVA several months ago and am really curious about the context it was produced in, would love to hear more about what you mentioned wrt how Maruo re/interpreted the story in comics and how Hiroshi Harada translated it to animation.

I’ve now found several of my favorite manga through you (thanksss!!). So I was wandering, how do you come across such awesome manga?

Anonymous

Do you think you'll ever plan to do a VHS/DVD watch of OVAs in the 90's? I think there are some cool anime OVAS from then that not a lot of people know who didn't buy tapes back then.

Anonymous

will there be a vid on video games? I hear so many great soundtracks from some cool games in your vids and I'm very curious about your tastes

Anonymous

Maybe annoying but can I just get a full list of all the ones in the video/ones you think are worth checking out so I can view them later at some point? lol

Anonymous

Really loved the video :) I was wondering whats some of your favorite horror anime/media? Whether its on VHS or something recent.

Anonymous

Thoughts on alien nine? Have you considered making something about later ovas (90's-early 00's) ?
