Edward "Babe" Heffron: "If anyone ever tells you the Holocaust didn't happen, or that it wasn't as bad as they say, no, it was worse than they say. What we saw, what these Germans did, it was worse than you can possibly imagine."

I met a lot of Holocaust survivors. When I was a company commander, my battalion CO organized a luncheon at the officers' club every year on Holocaust Remembrance Day, mandatory attendance by all officers. He invited all the Holocaust survivors in the area (San Diego County in the 90s, and there were quite a few). He asked them to choose one of their number to give a talk on any subject they wanted. We sat at round tables that seated eight, alternating one survivor and one Marine. We'd listen to the talk, have lunch, and just talk with the folks at our tables. The tattoos were faded but still visible on their arms. I admired them - they were a remarkably cheerful group. I guess when your yardstick for suffering has been stretched that far, any normal day is great. One old guy - his wife and mine were friends because they belonged to some of the same groups - used to laugh and say, "They tried to kill us. We're still here. Let's eat!" The colonel talked about how Eisenhower gave orders that as many Allied troops as possible personally tour the camps, because he anticipated the rise of Holocaust denialism and wanted there to be as many eyewitnesses as possible. Fifty years later our battalion CO was trying to do something similar by having as many of us as possible meet and talk with these survivors.

Semper Fi, Sir. I served from 99-07. Amazing story. Can't imagine meeting those heroes.
