Happy Monday, Addie! 😊 This was, and still is one of my favorite 80s movies. As a 9 year old girl when this movie first came out, I used to have a huge crush on Matthew Broderick. LOL! Fun Fact: Matthew Broderick and Jennifer Grey(who plays his sister Jeannie) dated for 12 years after this movie came out. Looking forward to your next reaction. Have a great day today! 😊

Matthew Broderick was 23 when filming this movie, Alan Ruck (Cameron) was 29, but Mia Sara (Sloane) was only 18. Broderick and Jennifer Grey (Jeannie, who was 26 during filming) were actually seeing each other and trying (poorly it turns out) to hide this fact when shooting the film. This is one of my favorite movies. There is a considerable amount of backstory here (who Charlie Sheen's character is in the police station, how the word got out about Ferris, etc...), as well as a lot of discussion about what is actually going on. Ferris really is an asshole, but he's well aware of what is going on around him. He's thought things through and he plans in advance - as Sloane points out. Especially viewed through today's lens, it's obvious that Cameron is suffering from clinical depression and possibly other things. Ferris has known this for a long time, as it is noted they've been best friends since the 5th grade (Around age 11) and he has spent time at Cameron's house. The theory is that Ferris is well aware that Cameron may be suicidal and iss putting in all this work in attempt to get his best friend out and doing things to put him on a better path before they have to part ways in a few months. Cameron has his epiphany in the museum looking at Seurat's "A Sunday on La Grande Jatte". A beautiful day with families in a lovely park, but one woman leading a single child who if frowning and in distress while she seemingly pays no attention. He starts his upward swing there as he realizes that his condition isn't exclusive to his life and has been happening all around the world, and by the time they get to the car park he's actually in a good mood. Once the trio realize the mileage on the the car he is forced to confront his own reality and in his own words when he explains later "I was meditating". Survivors of severe depression recognize his next act, falling into the pool, as a "pseudo-suicide", where he needs to cleanse himself of those thoughts by doing it in order to move past them. Knowing he had a friend that was willing to put all the work into the day and jump in and rescue him reinforced his resolve to move on with his life. His cathartic violence at the image of his father's love (instead of him or his mother) makes perfect sense as well. At the end of it all, even though Ferris offers to take the heat, Cameron wants it because he knows that his life will never be the same, but he'll always be a better person. Ferris sees this as well, which is why he's able to tell Sloane when she asks if Cameron is going to be okay "Yeah, probably for the first time in his life." Shortly after wrapping "Ferris" Broderick went on to play Colonel Robert Gould Shaw in the Civil War film "Glory" about the 54th Massachusetts - one of the first all-Black regiments in the United States Army (Cary Elwes, Morgan Freeman, Denzel Washington and many other big names.) - which was released in 1989. Because everyone knew him as the 17-18 year-old Ferris, they balked at Broderick playing a Colonel in the Union Army just a few years later. Little did they know the actor's true age, and most didn't realize that Robert Gould Shaw was only 25 when given command of the Regiment, Broderick's exact age when filming. There is actually a striking resemblance between the two men. I can't recommend the film highly enough if you haven't seen it yet!

Yes, like Michael J. Fox and Johnny Depp, Broderick managed to frankly still look like a teen all the way into his 30's.
