“Dad, why don’t I pronounce anything remotely like you? You’d think with fathers generally being one of the most significant influences in a child’s life that I’d at least say a few words like you do.”

Sam Katzman is an interesting person, here's a quote from on the set of Voodoo Man (one of the last of that series of movies Bela made for Monogram) "This is a cockeyed business. We dream up these hokey stories and we hire some actors and a fine director like William Beaudine (Invisible Ghost was Joseph H. Lewis). Then the money flows in as if we were great genuises. We're not. We're just lucky to be sitting in the right seats." The article that quote is taken from is from 1943 and was mainly about how John Carradine wanted to quit making movies and focus entirely on stage, needless to say this didn't happen. also apparently whille making Voodoo Man Carradine and Bela would spend off set time talking Shakespeare. If you want the whole thing, it's a good laugh, i can arrange it

Your mother & I did not want you to be stigmatized by a foreign accent, so we sent you to a very expensive boarding school where they taught you to talk posh.

I was quite surprised the first time that I saw Vincent Price in a non horror role, in Song of Bernadette.

Stephen Crane

Karloff in the Lost Patrol. While he did play a religious zealot, it wasn't a horror role.

Karloff in 'Targets' - ok, he's playing a horror actor but it's still a straight role. As for producer Sam Katzman, I'd recommend the 'Jungle Jim' series with Johnny Weissmuller. There's Nazis dressed in ape suits, jungle girls, Moon Men wearing beach towels, Atom Bomb testing, Commie agents, diamond mines and Tamba the Talented Chimp!

It was good to see Bela not pulling the strings, for once. It's a pity he was typecast so early on, just imagine how many jolly uncles or kindly fathers he could have played on screen.

Peter Cushing in 'Biggles: Adventures in Time' (his final film role) as up till then I'd only seen him in Hammer films. Although his first entrance is as menacing as any he made as Frankenstein he soon becomes a kindly gentleman and gives a touching performance in a really bad film. (Basically they started out doing a 'Biggles' film because it would be a good 'Indiana Jones' cash in, then 'Back to the Future' happened so they added time travel. Needs a review.) The dinner scene in this reminded me of 'Dinner for one' where Freddy Frinton's butler plays all the people at a dinner party for his mistress. I half expected Evens here to start playing the wife.

"We don't always have to scrape the bottom of the Breen... pardon: barrel."

Voodoo Man is another great example of Legosi playing a broken hearted husband who resorts to unorthodox methods to alleviate his woes.

I saw this one; part of one of my "Eleven Thousand Horror Quickies On DVD" collection, and we were way more worried about what they were going to ask the actor playing Evans to do than any murder. It was a relief to see him play a role without any stereotypical grossness you would assume would be par for the course in this kind of thing.

Alright lads? It is I, an Australian, attempting to speak your breed of language. Just wanted to say, you’re continued high quality and sheer volume of work has forced me to patronise you. I do enjoy bad movies as well as good. I don’t always enjoy watching the whole thing though. Very glad that you’ll do that for me. Much appreciated.
