Summary: After their luxury cabin cruiser crashes on a reef, Bob Rainsford finds himself washed ashore on a remote island. He finds a fortress-like house, and the owner, Count Zaroff, seems to be quite welcoming. Apart from Zaroff's servant Ivan, the only other people present are Eve Trowbridge and her brother Martin, also survivors of their own shipwreck. Other survivors are missing, however, and Rainsford soon learns why. Zaroff releases them into his jungle island and then hunts them down in his grisly outdoor chess game. Then after Martin disappears Bob realizes that he and Eve are to be the next pawns in Zaroff's deadly game.

I love this version-- Rifftrax does a great take on the colorized print: "I trust you implicitly, most obviously evil man in the universe!" It goes well with the earlier, MST take on the story, Bloodlust. My favorite plot curlicue, as it were, in both is the eeee-vil hunter guy/Robert Reed, respectively, explaining where their gigantic fortress/mansion hideaway came from in the first place. Because audiences buy crazed millionaires hunting men for sport without a qualm, but they need a logical breakdown on the real estate issue.

Well, yeah. It's like Batman. I can understand how he got Alfred to run him up a costume & customize the car, but who built and equipped the secret Bat Cave? Hmmm? Enquiring minds want to know!

Stephen Crane

I always confused this with the Conan Doyle story.

We watched this movie in high school English class after reading the story, and had to write down the many many differences between story and film. Other adaptations besides this one that are great? I love Hard Target and Surviving the Game.

This version of TMDG does its best to make Zaroff look like the Devil in every scene.

TMDG is strangely fitting for its time. Reflecting on the recent World War where indeed men hunted men. And the rise of Fascism in Europe and Japan where the hunt would seen be on again ... only many, many times worse.

Still harping on the same movies guys. WAXWORK is streaming on Amazon UK, this movie was just made for Robin; it was Anthony Hickox first movie which he wrote ( in three days) and directed. It stars Zach Galligan ( Gremlins) David Warner ( TIME AFTER TIME, THE OMEN ) . Patrick Macnee ( THE HOWLING, tv's THE AVENGERS). The two other bad films for review are BLOOD OF DRACULA'S CASTLE; there's a lot history with this film. The producer Rex Carlton was found dead shortly after the film was finished. Rumor has it he used Mob money to make the film and when he came up short on money to have the film printed, Carlton was found shot the head in his apartment. The Police finally wrote it off as a suicide because they would only guess that Carlton had help leaving our plane of reality. The Director of this film was murdered in 1995 and buried in backyard by his Live-In Contractor . There are two versions of BODC. One with a Werewolf and one without. Only the second version is the one broadcasted. The other movie is TEENAGERS BATTLE THE THING ( AKA THE CURSE OF BIGFOOT). This movie came out in 1958, but new footage was added on in the early 70's to take advantage of the Bigfoot craze that was in the country ( LEGEND OF BOGGY CREEK).

I think this is a really great film, I saw it way back when BBC2 did a double bill with 'King King' to celebrate Wray. It certainly holds it own with Kong and is it's own thing. Of the knock offs one that is worth looking at is the Ozplitation film 'Turkey Shoot' AKA 'Thatcher's Island' directed by Brian Trechard-Smith it shifts the action to a prison island where inmates are to be hunted in an annual game, including Steve Railsback's political agitator. It's got a great story, but lack of budget did effect the final film. Not least because one of the producers lost two thirds of the budget betting on the Melbourne Cup the week before filming started.

David Nevarrez

I am a fan of this film. Most of the other versions I've seen just fall short.
