Summary: In 1828 in Edinburgh, Scotland, grave robbers provide Dr. Knox with the corpses of the recently deceased. Knox is a professor at the university where medical students take in his every word. He is not only venerated by his students but by his ward and niece Martha, who has returned from her Paris finishing school unexpectedly. He is somewhat arrogant however and is held in contempt by many of his less able colleagues. One of his students, Chris Jackson meets barmaid Mary Patterson when he goes to the tavern to pay off the grave robbers and become involved with her. William Hare and William Burke take to killing lodgers at Burke's house and delivering them to Knox as a means to make money. One of Dr. Knox's colleagues, Dr. Geoffrey Mitchell, begins to suspect the origin of the numerous corpses Hare and Burke provide. When Hare kills Mary in a fit of passion, Jackson discovers her body in the lecture room and he too is killed by the body snatchers. Their scheme begins to unravel quickly leading to their arrest. Knox also has to deal with the fallout of his implicit participation in their scheme.

Have long admired this film. Fully agree with your take on the mix of history and horror, the sense of realism, especially with Cushing's mastery of his role. It's also interesting to compare it to THE DOCTOR AND THE DEVILS ('85), which had been written by Dylan Thomas in the late '40's (I read the book shortly before the film came out), which also mixes gothic horror with the reality. It's always interesting how the laws, mirroring society's mores, block scientific advancement, but then the same society demands answers from science (which we have again being seeing in action, tho' the laws have been less stifling).

That was thing about Donald Pleasence. He was, by all accounts, a gentle, kind man but he was able to play complete creeps. It's no different in this film.

Good review! Just realised I saw this years ago under the title Mania. I remembered nothing about it except that it was alright, not great. Must watch it again, but not in the unrestored 4:3 cheapie version I saw last time.

This one was shown on the outdoor screen during the Edinburgh festival in the mid 90s. Which was great, although it was, predictably, raining. 'The Most Assonated Woman in the World' on Netflix is a good mix of the historical and horror. A fictionalised version of the life of Paula Maxa and the Grand Guignol Theatre in Paris. It takes some liberties with the timeline but is as much about that era of French history as about Maxa herself.

Relatively accurately... but then the accents do indeed throw you off. Still, Donald Pleasance and Peter Cushing? That's worth a large bucket of popcorn in anybody's home theatre.

For a totally different take on Donald Pleasence, try The Hallelujah Trail (1965).

Excellent film. Peter Cushing gives a compelling performance and sells the ending!
