Summary: In 1966 the Spanish Army built a huge cemetery with 5000 graves in Burgos for the final sequence in the film "The Good the Bad and the Ugly". After the shooting, the whole place was left behind and for 49 years, nature covered every tomb. In October 2015 a group of film fans decided to start digging and under 3 inches of ground they found the original paved circle. For months, people from all around Europe traveled to Sad Hill to unearth and rebuild the place. Sad Hill Unearthed is the amazing story behind one of the most iconic locations in film history. It explores the dreams and motivations behind the fans but also the transformation of art, music and film in a substitute for religion.

This is a great film, and Sir Christopher is right. Why doesn't Leone get the credit he deserves? I know Tarantino pays lip service to him but apart from that he really isn't in the convocation. Yet his films are so expansive. Plus I'd rather watch four minuets of three men standing in circle staring at each other, to that amazing score than see how many cuts flavour of the month can fit into a second. On being enabled Frayling chose the motto 'Perge Scelus Mihi Diem Perficias' the closest you can get in Latin to "Go ahead punk, make my day" As it seems we can't have the film it would be great to recreate, or find, the show tent from '4 Devils'. Or restore all the historic Colonial Street houses, including the Munster house, The Harvey House (used for close work in 'Psycho'), The Elm Street House and other historic film houses and sets destroyed to make sodding 'Desperate Housewives'

Stephen Crane

I watched the Good, The Bad, and the Ugly in a cinema that had the sound cranked up. So the gunfire sounded like cannon fire, the cannon fire sounded like explosions and the explosions sounded like nukes going off. My ears rang for a week but we thanked the owner for listening to our request to turn it up.

Terry Pratchett translated it as 'Fabricate Diem Punc' as the motto of the Ankh Morpork City Watch. rb

Isn’t Sad Hill in Lonesome Town right off The Boulevard of Broken Dreams?

A simple, whispered, "Wow." I had no idea this documentary existed. Thanks so much for putting it on my radar.

Mind boggling! And what a great way to raise funds & give the fans a real piece of real estate. Mind you, they're all mad as hatters, but it's a glorious madness. Can't think of any film set/location I love that needs restoring, but I'd gladly dig up whatever motorway it is that they supposedly dumped the film from The Wicker Man into.

I wonder if Leone's being overlooked is because he did so few films; only 7 features, 6 in a 10 year period, then 13 years before his last, which, as I recall, was kind of slammed at the time, having been savagely cut by the studio (a la GREED).
