I think there is an element of writing characters that are basically twitter trolls, or rotten tomatoes commenters, because they assume people want to see those people. Thing is most people find them a huge turn off. It's a bit like the smug bland hero of the 50s, or the yuppie frat boy of the 80s. Or the modern day equivalent of the Playboy Geologist.

This exposes the problem American filmmaker seem to have. If this were done by an English or European director then it is more likely that the film would have been infinitely more psychologically terrifying.

Stephen, can you explain yourself a bit more. I mean that respectfully. I'm not disagreeing, I just would like to know a bit more of what led you to this conclusion, because I've seen annoying characters without borders, so to speak.
