I’ve never heard Buñuel’s name said out loud before (I think) so, as usual for me, the first time is how I say it forever after. Just like how I pronounce Salome as Sal-oh-may because of Salome’s Last Dance, which is definitely weird but not for weirdness’ sake. Highly recommended but its not for kids. What is weird for only weirdness sake is The Oregonian (2011), which couldn’t be more openly trying to be a Lynch piece if it tried. I don’t recommend it.

If you want to clean the taste of that out of your brain, find a copy of the 1964 "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" episode, "The Jar" from a story by Ray Bradbury, Directed by Norman Lloyd...and probably the creepiest damn thing ever broadcast on American television.

You made the film so much better by intercutting John Cleese.

I also loved the John Cleese "Monty Python" insert.

Is that the one where the kid brings a head in a jar to "show & tell"?

Even my dreams, disjointed & surreal as they are, make more sense than this film appears to!

Stephen Crane

I will get absolutely pilloried for this but I've always considered 2001: A Space Odyssey to be unwatchable nonsense. I have seen it in three instalments. The ending with Kier Dullea becoming Ziggy Stardust after his Google Nest kills his fellow astronauts, the disappearing crew bit with the cut price John Steed, and the chimpanzees re-enacting Quest for Fire. It's not an Anti-Stanley Kubrick thing as Paths of Glory is a favorite of mine. It's just that I feel the movie of someone given free reign without being told to have, as you said, a plot to hang the weirdness on. I enjoy weird movies, with a plot, so the movie you reviewed will likely remained unwatched by me.

So basically this was the concepts of "I saw Altered States at an impressionable age," a guy insisting on putting his relationship-fulfillment fantasy of an attractive and articulate woman liking a whiny droning nitwit on film, and the worst parody of film- school excess all being put into a blender.

Jasmine Zantara

This movie was a horrendous chore to sit through in its entirety. One of the worst horror films I have ever seen, and I have seen a lot of bad stuff. am surprised you didn't bring up the botched, nonsensical ending and hoping you mention it in the Detractor's Commentary.

If you like violent cephalopods and implausible romances in a film that is weird for weirds sake then check out 'The Calamari Wrestler' Interestingly Frank Silva who played Bob in 'Twin Peaks' was actually a set dresser and got caught in shot crouching by a lamp by accident. Instead of reshooting Lynch asked him if he had a SAG card, and on finding out he did wrote in the Bob character.
