I only enjoyed the last act of Rogue One (and then only the space portion of the Battle of Scariff) but whoever designed that poster of the Death Star rising over the horizon had a simple kind of genius about him even if it was just an artistic take on a shot from the movie. The fact it took decades for this potential to be realized on film is disappointing.

While the US poster designed by Saul Bass is splendid, the UK one-sheet for The Shining, with the "Here's Johnny" images of Nicholson and Duvall is awful for all the same reasons the Carrie one is. Of course, the film is a classic. Another gawdawful poster, and one that almost dissuaded me from seeing the film, is the original poster for Near Dark. The image of a hamburger-faced Bill Paxton, beams of light projecting from him like lasers was anything but evocative of the film I thankfully took a chance on. Spent the matinee-bargain money and discovered a lifelong fav. A poster with a truly horrifying image is the one for Pandorum. The tag line "Fear What Happens Next" is PERFECT, because after seeing the poster, I saw the film, which was terrible.

My favorite horror film set in Maine is the big screen version of a US soap opera from the 60s - Night of Dark Shadows. The film has its flaws, but it is beautiful to watch and has the single best female vampire that I have ever seen. And the whole "vampire finds the reincarnation of his lost love" bit beats the Coppola travesty all to heck.

We're watching Dark Shadows right now and my husband, who's from Maine, is finding the version where there's full moons all month long, it's either raining, midnight or both at all times, and there's tons of farmland six inches from the coast deeply amusing.
