Summary: Swimming near a Mexican village that has been terrorized by a sea monster, Julie Blaie (Anne Kimball), and American artist, is terrified when an object rises to the surface. It turns out to be a one-man submarine piloted by biologist Steve Dunning ('Stuart Wade' (qb)). Later an abalone diver vanishes and Julie faints after seeing the monster's eye rise from the sea. Pablo (Wyott Ordung) and Tula (Inez Palange) plot to offer Julie as a sacrifice to their gods. Pablo deliberately attracts a shark while Juilie is skin-diving, but she escapes, and her line snags an object that Steve and Dr. Baldwin (Dick Pinner) establish as part of a huge sea monster.

So glad you finally got to review this little Corman gem.

Even though they can be a bit overdone, I always found underwater horror movie scenes to be especially creepy. Of course, the original "Creature From the Black Lagoon" underwater scenes are legendary. However, I got a huge chill from the underwater scene (in which Professor Elson was killed) from "The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms". I also found the underwater scene in "Gojira" ("Godzilla") to also be especially poetic and poignant.

"The fairest must be sacrificed to the .... thing" Deliberate, or did she forget what they called the thing?

First off, I really really REALLY want that t shirt! One thing I like about Corman is beyond his unbeatable eye for talent (someone should sit down and tally exactly how many performers/directors/crew members got their start with him and went on to stardom) is his loyalty to his stable. He cast actors like Haze and Bruce VeSota over and over again, and had them play everything from genial sheriffs to jealous husbands to underworld figures to crazed sons of barbarian kings. How many other producers would do that?

Plucked from Obscurity? A hard one. I suppose Sean Connery and Harrison Ford are the two that leap to mind. But then there are the actors who had faded or been forgotten, such as two of my favorites Robert Forster and Pam Grier. But if I mention them, then I have to mention John Travolta I suppose. After all, you can argue that Tarantino brought them all back from obscurity.

He had a free sub for a shoot and he only made one movie. He clearly was just learning. In 10 years he would have gotten at least two movies out of a free mini sub.

Tim Burton used Grier in 'Mars Attacks' which got her back in the mainstream eye. Apparently one casting agent told Christopher Lee that they had spent years looking for Christopher Lee types as until 'Sleepy Hollow' they thought he'd died in the 80s.

Plucked from obscurity would maybe be Catherine E. Coulson. Who was well known behind the camera, as second unit director on the Nimoy directed 'Trek' films as well as many other credits. But because old friend David Lynch had a bee in his bonnet for a decade about having her walk round with a log she became known as The Log Lady forever more. Not sure if it counts but Cameron Diaz in 'The Mask' she had no interest in acting, turned the film down three times to concentrate on modelling eventually agreeing and turning into a huge star. If not for the persistence to get her in 'The Mask' she'd probably be best remembered for Cohiba advert.
