"Host" TERRIFIED me. I had to take a "Homicidal"-style Fright Break after the attic scene. And I had a scheduled Zoom call with friends the next morning! But, you're not wrong. Just goes to show how dependent horror is on the individual who's watching it. :D

The Room (I forget the year, and its about a Japanese lady vlogging about how she misses her fiance) was similar with similar problems. Credit to the main actress for what I remember being an excellent job.

I've seen it and I was under impressed. With the exception of Cloverfield, I've never appreciated the found footage genre. For this one, a screen just filled with faces, no real idea of who they are, what they do or what they mean to each other doesn't allow me to invest in any of the characters. I found myself indifferent. For me, the scares were momentarily scary and then gone. I didn't understand why were these people still on line with each other. Maybe it's because I'm a grumpy old fart, but I couldn't get interested or worked up about any of it. So yes, as Dark Roast said, it all depends upon the individual who is watching it and, for me, it was a shoulder shrug. 🤔

How about a story in which the device - TV, computer, phone, etc - can't be turned off, or turns itself back on again? Combine that with an "intelligent house" that has the lights, locks and security system, including video cameras in every room, controlled by tech either gone rogue or possessed, and your protagonist would be effectively trapped and unable to discontinue the Chat From Hell.

I think Colleen's got something: the main problem, as you said, is that anybody with a shred of self preservation is eventually going to just shut down the computer and leave. So you need a compelling reason why ALL the people involved cannot do so; it can involve one or more of them physically unable to turn off their phone or whatever, and/or the rest of the characters being forced to keep watching.
