Summary: There is something strange going on in the peaceful town of Mossingham, right after the fantastic rescue mission in Shaun the Sheep Movie (2015). As mischievous Shaun orders in pizza for the woolly flock under the nose of the Farmer, and Bitzer, the ever-watchful sheepdog, a mysterious, fast-moving UFO enters the Earth's atmosphere and crash-lands near the verdant Mossy Bottom Farm. Now, Lu-La, the extraordinary friendly creature from the depths of the galaxy, is in grave danger, light-years away from home. Can Shaun, and the rest of the lambs, lend a helping hand, and protect their new extraterrestrial companion from the Ministry of Alien Detection, and its unstoppable leader, Agent Red?

Wonderful! I've been back in the US since 2005 and didn't realize that Shaun had made even one film, let alone two. That's going straight onto my watchlist.

VC

I have to see this.

A kids film that is too good for kids? Hmmm... In the world of animation I'd say anything by Studio Ghibli and the Despicable Me / Minions stuff. Far too many adult in-jokes in the later and a child wouldn't see the amazing work done on Ghibli's stuff, although they love the worlds being shown them. In 'real' films. I say The Princess Bride, otherwise I'm momentarily stumped.

I would say the "Hotel Transylvania" films (obviously), but also Disney's "Hercules" (1997).

Yay, Sean the Sheep! I mentioned in the Harryhausen post that this is my favorite type of stop motion! As for too good for kids, I'd say The Fantastic Mr. Fox. The animation and the voice work is beyond top notch, and the script is sophisticated and hilarious. "I'm your lab partner!" "No, you're not. You're disloyal."

I'd make a case for the largely unseen "Cats Don't Dance" (1997), in which a cat heads to Hollywood to become a star, only to find all they want him to do is meow. There's a lot of fun characters and some good songs, but the storyline evokes all those couldn't do what they wanted in Hollywood (Black actors of the era--it's set in 1939--come to mind rapidly).
