Must admit, I'm more partial to the Japanese horror film House, or Hausu, but cheers on the review

Stephen Crane

I do hate it when I disagree with you, Robin. William Katt, George Wendt, and Richard "Bull" Moll made this a film I loved as a teenager.

No. No. This is bad. Sad thing is: not as bad as the sequels.

Why? Why review this film? House was that one film that non-horror fans used to always ask me if I had seen. Apparently, it was good to them because it had recognizable sitcom actors.

Annihilation (2018) was an extremely tedious exercise in boring and unlikeable people wandering through an otherwise very interesting environment, and I can’t help but think the director was trying to be deep at the end but it fell flat on its face for me. All intangible criticisms, I admit. The Bear Scene was good though.

When I think of this movie, it always connects with Fright Night in my head, even though they aren't really like each other. Both films came out with a year, Fright Night in August 1985 and House was released wide in the US at the end of February 1986, and both did about as well at the box office. Most importantly for a kid who never saw anything from Horror movies but posters, one was a horror movie named "House", and one was a horror movie that prominently featured a House on the poster and from the little trailer bits I saw from Fright Night, it seemed like the house was really important. So a connection was formed in my 8 year old brain. Obviously, while both are horror films from the 1980's make-up horror era, and both have some level of cult classic, they're not particularly similar, with Fright Night being a more traditional studio film which was what I expected. This film, on the other hand, it's so much that I can't say I really liked it, but I appreciate the way it doesn't do what you would expect from and Amityville+Makeup film and also doesn't feel the need to have the cynical ending that most of these films have. If only they could have had the Roger character make any sense or found a consistent tone throughout.

This is one I never actually saw. Now I'm glad.

Ick. I hate it when film-makers can't decide what genre they're going for. As a straight horror or comedy, it could have been OK, but by sticking the script in a blender and hitting the pulse button, they turned it into an indigestible bowl of gloop.

I had a VHS of this and liked it. Of course that was 30 years back... Other popular films I didn't like? The Kristen Stewart vampire rubbish and the Hunger games trilogy. Books and films. I understand the vampire flics were teenage romance, no horror based but how can anybody view a creature that lives on us as just misunderstood? As for the hunger games... the economics just don't work, nor does the population base to support the capitol and as for the technology... Gah! Arrant tripe.

Husband and I watched this last year in a fit of "hey, remember that box at the video store?" nostalgia and it was one of those experiences where you keep going "wait, is this really happening?" It was such a weird, lumpy porridge of a movie. Another popular film that fell apart for me as an adult was Amityville Horror. No, not any of the sequels (which are wretched), the original film. The bizarre choices everybody makes, the wild overacting, the whole "It's a portal...to HELL!" thing? Just does not work for me.

Amityville is a series with about 23 films and none of them above 3/5 most are 1 or 2 stars. Look forward to our deep dive one day.

We suspect the nostalgia is strong with this one. One of the great horror movie posters and a gateway for some horror fans.
