Sikander

I once read a brief summary of The Hunger that made it sound like this movie.

First of all, that Tom Stoppard reference was just 👌 Second, weird that this has Vic Diaz as my first experience of him was this week with Night of The Cobra Woman (very much recommended for a review, especially for its slanted parallels to Sssssss) Third, Carradine is one of my favorite horror actors, which is what makes it weird that my favorite role of his is a comedic one in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.

I found this incredibly funny - since I happen to live in the Philippines (where I've retired). However, there is a marked absence of beautiful vampire women in my neighborhood. Maybe I'm not looking in the right places...

John Carradine's voice is so fantastic that him reciting poetry elevates this film to a level it does not deserve.

As for my favorite performance, besides his roles in legit films like Grapes of Wrath and such, I love him in The Unearthly, where he's a scientist experimenting with glands to produce eternal life. He seems to have really thought through his setup--remote "sanatorium" where he can lure unstable, unhappy people who become experiments, a doctor in town to make sure said lure-ees have no family ties, beautiful, devoted assistant...it's honestly refreshing to see a mad scientist who minds his p's and q's with the details.

Listening to John's voice, immediately brings back an episode of 'The Fall Guy', I forgot which one, where he appears with his sons; Robert Keith and David. I think Elvira was in it as well, but my memory is foggy and looking it up on Google is cheating. Favourite role? Possibly Grapes of Wrath, where he was an almost deranged preacher. Or maybe the small roll he had in The Howling as the aged, crippled werewolf bemoaning his fate and wanting one last hunt.
