The Cat and the Canary was published by Samuel French in 1921. It became a stage play in 1922 by John Willard. Concerning Creighton Hale. He was in the 1928 comedy "Riley of the Rainbow Division" The part I find amusing was the UK name "Flappers in Khaki."

The 1939 version is available on YouTube. It is a funny vehicle for Bob Hope who plays his normal screen persona of a brash, wise-cracking coward. George Zucco and Gale Sondergaard are featured.

To continue: Paulette Goddard is the love interest. I totally agree with you about the camera work in the 1927 version. I also noticed that title cards are used sparingly. The 1939 version has pretty standard camera work and is much more verbal, Bob Hope, as always in his early films, is a fast talker. It's an enjoyable movie, well worth seeing. IMDB gives it a 7.2. The 1927 version is rated 7.1.
