I'm Working On: Mothra (Patreon)

The fact that it's recently been in film news is purely coincidental...
I think with Matango (which got a really god reaction) we've proved we can be amusingly critical of films that people like whilst still acknowledging their plus points - we don't have to just do the absolute car crashes. Mothra I think we have to be even more careful about as it's a well-regarded kaiju that introduced a much-loved character. That said, it's not perfect and has not aged well, largely because it now has to contend with its own legacy and that of the Toho kaiju cycle in general. In this case it also has to contend with its own poster advertising a very different movie. I think Mothra went on to become one of the more distinctive of the giant monsters in character terms but, for both humans and monsters, character is not a big concern in this movie.
