Beyond the Film: Cyclops

No one has ever paid this much attention to the work of B.I. Gordon. I'd forgotten how much of this wobbly little movie was shot at the Mecca of monster movies, Bronson Canyon in Griffith Park. And then there's Gloria Talbott, arguably the definition of a working actor in the fifties, showing up and doing the best she could with what was handed her...including "I Married a Monster from Outer Space."

Bert I Gordon has influenced my work as well. If you look at EARTH VS THE SPIDER , I think that was Gordon's favorite of all his movies ( Producer , Director , Actor , co-writer and did the FX). This film had such impression on me that I wrote the short story for MONSTER CLUB - THE BOOK called X - FFECTS.

In the story I have a film maker ( Benjamin Ivan Gray ) visit an old private air field with lots of large hangers outside Las Vegas. The place is a giant spider ranch and the guy running it is the same guy we see in EARTH VS THE SPIDER ( Hugo ) and TARANTULA ( hotel clerk / owner ) , so I assume he's the one providing giant spiders for the movies. In my other X-FFECT stories I do a connection between THE CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON and H.P. Lovecraft , and in a third I show how and why the classic monsters left Hollywood for Hammer in the UK.

I thought I bring this up while I had the chance. But we have arrived at the 60th anniversary of the Ed Gein case and how his arrest changed horror as we know it.

So the writing got stalled - Trying to find the way in to tell "Ed Gein at the Movies" Research is all done. It is coming - but I a have giant Hammer Frankenstein retrospective in the edit. We also have a series of Xmas of specials for December.

Whoah, it's weird actually SEEING Graham, rather than just hearing his voice off-camera. xD Fun video. I enjoyed this little bonus discussion! The idea of a protagonist taking years to get around to initiating a search for a missing loved one sounds like it could be a fun idea for a story of mine! I'm working on a collection of comedies inspired by B-movies, and the golden age of Hollywood, and this wouldn't be the first time a Bert I. Gordon picture has given me inspiration.
