Answering your question on why Ed "Didn't fight like this before" (3:40). When Ed fought Scar for the first time, he was at his lowest state mentally. A) The girl/dog that he grew a bone with was officially gone, and there was no way for them to save Nina and bring her back to her usual self. B) A psychopath (Tucker) told Ed that they were the same, in ideology and the actions they took (Nina's transformation = Ed's attempt to bring his mother back to life). C) The ideology of alchemy that Ed praised and lives by was used to commit a horrific action. Ed was still battling the thought of separating Nina's transformation and the philosophy he follows so closely to his heart. With these three things, Ed was at his lowest point. When he faced Scar, he was afraid and could only run away. In their first attack, Al was hit with a fatal blow and was at risk of dying. In Ed's 2 to 3rd attack, his arm was destroyed.

Ed's second fight was in the laboratory; he wasn't supposed to be there and didn't know who was in charge of the 5th laboratory. So, his mission was to be done as stealthily as possible. He didn't want to make too much noise to draw the guards' attention or scare off the people working in secret. Finally, Ed began his investigation of the five laboratory. If the fight got out of hand, he could destroy significant evidence he needed to see or demolish the building involuntarily. His arm gave out at the end of his fight with #48/Envy. Ed looks cool here and makes you question why "he was weak" during his other fights, but there are some good arguments to be made.

A few things, Wes, 1st the people who do automail aren't pervs; they are like geeks. It is easy to call a guy a perv (when the 2 dudes wanted to see Ed's automail in exchange for helping find Ed's stolen watch), but Winry does the same thing when she meets Paninya. It's like when geeks see a real sword that someone made or something exclusive, like a rare Pokemon card or Lego set that isn't in circulation. Automail people are just geeking out at seeing what they like and the different techniques other people use. 2nd, Japan has a very different culture than us in the West. Let's say you are at a cabin in winter before your first child is born. Steph suddenly goes into labor, and driving a car isn't an option due to the weather. But you can get a snowmobile to get a doctor from the nearest town. Would you rather have a family member go and you stay behind to support your wife and be present at your child's birth? Or would you leave to get the doctor and possibly miss the birth of your daughter?
