A lot to cover here. First, Selma Rose is played by Patricia Hearst. Known for being the granddaughter of newspaper mogul William Randolph Hearst ( inspiration for Citizen Kane). Patricia was kidnapped in 1974 by the SLA brainwashed, indoctrinated, threatened and assaulted into joining in with their crimes including an armed bank robbery. She was arrested and convicted, but I don't believe actually served much if any jail time. But, was the subject of much public scrutiny, judgement etc. Why she had to be hidden? Let's see if I can explain. So, Cali is a community property state. A divorce after 10 yrs, it all gets divided equally. So, the brother was doing business deals that would result in the company ( and therefore Selma) being worth millions more. But, Selma would not have approved those business deals if she wasn't locked up, so she needed to be hidden away so he could get the most money in the divorce. Wow, the Pop culture references in this episode. The Jimmy Hoffa line ( which Hallie incorrectly says as Hoffman) referencing the disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa and actor Dustin Hoffman all in one dialogue exchange. National Lampoon's Vacation and The Bionic Woman referenced as V and Keith break in to save Selma. The Ryan and Tatum O'Neal name drop. It's a lot and if you don't know the names or references it goes right past you. Oh, why everyone thinks what happened to Chip is a joke. Well, here in the good ole USA, people tend to believe that a man cannot be sexually assaulted. So, really only V sees it as the assault it is. Most see it as a prank and not a crime. Despite the fact it most definitely is a crime worthy of being a) reported and b) prosecuted. But, even if Chip reported it what do you think the odds are that Sheriff Lamb would either care or take it seriously?
