Whenever Robert Pattinson talks about how he prepared for his role in Twilight, he never mentions watching Buffy or Angel. According to him, all he did was read the books and that's it. Take from that what you will. Vampires in Buffyverse require a wooden object to pierce the heart in order to kill them. It doesn't necessarily have to be a stake though. Depending on the vampire, usually any wooden object will do. Bullets would therefore only hurt them. Penn was indeed played by Jeremy Renner.
