Thank you for realizing that the parents are not under a spell or possessed. I've been saying this for 20 years. They are simply convinced to kill their children out of fear. The parents of Sunnydale have never been there when their children needed them most. They have always been MIA or worse, just not caring about what's going on around their children. They bury their heads in the sand and leave the children to fend for themselves. The one time they do start caring they decide to just kill their children rather than protect them. I don't see nearly enough condemnation of the parents over this from the fandom. Between ignoring Buffy, kicking Buffy out and now this, Joyce is proving herself to be in contention for the worst parent award. On the bright side, Amy makes a cute rat. I'm glad to see Oz and Xander start to work together again. Maybe there won't be so much awkwardness in the group now. Oz is really a special person to be able to put aside what happened for the good of the group and Willow. It has to still hurt him very much everytime he sees Xander and Willow together but he is a big enough man to forgive them for Willow's sake.

I think of Buffy Parents like any horror movie parent, just out of the way so they can get away with their story and like Steven King because plot needs it. Gets unrealistic after a while, especially it being the whole town in this case and I think that's why few talk about it, they become background like in a Charlie Brown movie. And then Oz🥰

Phoenix Dawn

In the 90s, around when Buffy was on TV, there was a Satanist panic. Buffy, DnD and other geeky things that had magic and fantastical things were all associated with Satanism (the bs version where human sacrifice etc. existed) Parents would ban their kids from books like Harry Potter, heavy metal etc. So, yeah, this episode is a bit of a commentary of the time and what even Buffy was accused of.

I guess that's mostly the reason why my mom never let me watch Buffy when I was young. because OMG SATAN x'D
