Vampires can be hurt by silver just like werewolves as long as it's nearly pure. It won't kill them though, the effects are similar to when they're exposed to garlic. Vampires typically feed off the jugular vein in the neck, not the carotid artery. A severed jugular will easily still kill a person, but be far less messy, and give the vampire a now controlled blood flow to drink from. Think drinking from a water fountain as compared to a fire hose.
