You probably know most of this by now, but just in case...So while kilts are normally reserved for formal occasions, they actually can be worn every day. England first invaded Scotland in 1296 which led to the first Scottish War for Independence (Braveheart takes place during this if you've watched it). Relations were bad between the two countries pretty much until James I became king of both countries in 1606 I think. The Glorious Revolution in...1688? soured things again until the monarchy was restored. That's why Colum was so mad at Jaime. By marrying an English woman, he was essentially giving up any support for him to inherit lands and titles. Also realize that women didn't get the right to vote in the United Kingdom until 1928, so back then they were definitely viewed as glorified property of their husbands. That's why none of the other Scotsmen did anything when Jaime and Claire were fighting. To them, Jaime's just doing his "husbandly duty" in punishing an unruly wife. I easily see you doing a lot more damage to Jaime if you had been in Claire's spot during the "spanking."
