As summarized in my specific article about it, there's no clear winner between DTM vs HGIG for improving HDR rendition in games.

Both aims to achieve the same goal (fully leveraging the real TV luminance capabilities) but in different ways:

  • HGIG is objectively the most accurate but can be overly dark in games which doesn't support Peak HDR Luminance sliders and/or when not viewed in a dark room;
  • DTM (Dynamic Tone Mapping) is objectively the most bright most of the time but can be overly bright with clipped highlights and raised mids/blacks, especially during night scenes.

On this Patreon you can find optimized settings for both, but my question is:

After all the HDR games you played so far, what are YOU preferring/choosing between DTM and HGIG in the end (and why)?

HGIG Very occasionally I uncheck HDR from my PS5/Xbox settings to play in SDR if DTM is recommended because I don't want to switch and recalibrate so often if I'm having a long gaming sesh

DTM on for me. My front room has light pouring in when it’s daytime and i prefer playing with a light on when it’s nighttime. HGiG is just way too dark for my set-up. RE4 Remake was the catalyst that made me switch to DTM and it’s SO much better looking. Other games like The Witcher 3 and Elden Ring also look much better, due to the former having a fixed luminance setting and the latter having a mediocre HDR implementation. Some games are overly bright sometimes but i’ll just deal
