If you spent years finding the best solutions to fully squeeze your real LG TV capabilities (e.g., using "PC" Mode for 4:4:4 Chroma Subsampling or not due to many options being limited/locked out? Having a "forced" Wide Color Gamut in SDR with low input lag or a proper Auto Color Gamut exclusive to a different, higher input lag SDR preset?) and you ended up choosing the best "compromise" instead, well, you don't need to choose between any compromise at all now, thanks to the free and open source ColorControl app, exclusively available on Windows and developed by Maassoft.

With this neat and lightweight application, you can fully access to ALL your TV settings remotely (within the same home network) and change them (permanently!) even if you have them forcefully locked out on your TV in particular presets/modes.

This really opens an infinite possibility of customization and tweaking for your TV which was never possibile before.

I'll show you some of the best tweaks you can do below.

For example: All LG OLEDs from 2017 to 2023 series are supported by the tool, which is also regularly updated to add support for newer TVs as well.

So, how does it work?

First of all, turn on your LG TV and be sure it is connected to your home network, then:

1. Download and install the latest version of ColorControl app from the official website (download the .zip file)

2. Extract the ColorControl folder from the zip file wherever you like on your PC

3. When you first open the ColorControl exe file in it, it will ask you to install an official Microsoft .NET redistributable package which is required for the app to work. Just download it and install it

4. A dialog box may appear asking you to also install a service in Windows to elevate the privileges of the app to properly work. Click Yes if this happens and (to be sure) always remember to open the app as an Administrator

5. You LG TV should be recognized automatically and a prompt asking to connect it to the app should appear. Click Yes.

If you have an error and the app can't detect your TV, you can also add it manually by providing a Custom name, the TV IP Address and its MAC address as well (you can usually retrieve them from your router)

6. Once the TV is connected, you will have unlimited control of ALL TV options for any preset/mode currently loaded on your TV. Click on Expert button and start playing with this super powerful tool!

BEST COLORCONTROL TWEAKS FOR 2017-2023+ LG OLEDs (to apply on top of my Optimized Settings)

LG 2023+ OLEDs:

  • Auto-Dimming was fixed by LG and disabling TPC/GSR is no more necessary from here on!
  • Fully unlock PC Mode and customize any locked setting to your preference (except TruMotion settings, which unfortunately will remain locked)
  • Unlock and switch Peak Brightness to "HIGH" in SDR Game preset in order to restore a comparable luminance to previous LG OLEDs in SDR with same SDR OLED Light value. Just don't go over SDR OLED Light 80 after doing so to avoid increasing image retention / burn-in risk
  • Unlock and switch Black Level from "AUTO" to "LOW" to fix raised or crushed black levels (black level mismatch) in SDR/HDR/DV presets
  • You can now enable HGIG also in HDR Filmmaker Mode: if you prefer it for games (this will slightly lower/improve input lag as well). Just remember to restore TV Black Level to 50 and set games' Peak HDR Luminance to 800 nits on C3/B3 and 1.500 nits on G3 after the change ;)

LG 2021-2022 OLEDs:

  • Auto-Dimming was fixed by LG and disabling TPC/GSR is no more necessary from here on!
  • Fully unlock PC Mode and customize any locked setting to your preference (except TruMotion settings, which unfortunately will remain locked)
  • Unlock and switch Peak Brightness to "HIGH" in SDR Game preset in order to restore a comparable luminance to previous LG OLEDs in SDR with same SDR OLED Light value. Just don't go over SDR OLED Light 80 after doing so to avoid increasing image retention / burn-in risk
  • Unlock and switch Black Level from "AUTO" to "LOW" to fix raised black levels (black level mismatch) in SDR/HDR/DV presets

LG 2019-2020 OLEDs:

  • Access to the hidden Service Menu via the InStart button (after enabling advanced options within the app) and Disable TPC/GSR (auto-dimming) from there
  • Fully unlock PC Mode and customize any locked setting to your preference (except TruMotion settings, which unfortunately will remain locked)

LG 2017-2018 OLEDs:

NOTE: When you apply a setting change via ColorControl app, you'll see a white box with no text on these TVs. Just click "BACK" on the physical remote to actually apply the change.

  • Access to the hidden Service Menu via the InStart button (after enabling advanced options within the app) and Disable TPC/GSR (auto-dimming) from there
  • Unlock and switch from "WIDE" to "AUTO" Color Gamut in SDR Game preset, then set its Color value back to 50 for restoring accurate colors
  • Unlock and switch Black Level from "AUTO" to "LOW" to fix raised black levels (black level mismatch) in SDR/HDR/DV presets
  • Use DV Game preset (with same optimized settings) instead of DV Cinema Home as DV Game demonstrated to be the best DV preset of these TVs (with the best DV Tone Mapping) with the exception of the "Real Cinema" option forcefully set to "OFF"...until now! Unlock and switch "Real Cinema" to "ON" using ColorControl and enjoy DV at its best!

ColorControl is a really powerful tool which single-handedly solved the most radicated issues and limitation of the otherwise excellent LG OLED line-up for years and could also extend to NVIDIA Control Panel customization/improvements as well if you have one of those GPUs.

Let me know what you think after the new tweaks and feel free to support my work here on Patreon as well if you like.

Enjoy! :)

Hey two questions: 1. I’m currently using your HDR FMM + ALLM + DTM setting on the G3. Is using Color Control to enable HGIG within FMM better? 2. Does doing this void the warranty of the tv?

techoptimized

1. It's better for the games where you can exactly set 1.500 nits Peak HDR Luminance in your case, but may look a bit off for the others where you can't (luckily there are fewer and fewer of the latter). Just remember to also set back Black Level from 49 to 50 if you will do so 2. No ;)

Hey Paolo! I managed to get it to work and enabled HGIG with FMM + ALLM. I also changed the black level from 49 to 50. Are there any other settings that need to be changed from your definitive guide, such as "Fine tune dark areas" or anything else?

techoptimized

Nope :) Just remember to change games' Peak HDR Luminance to 1.500 nits in your case and also re-do the system level HDR Calibration for it.
